Latin America: The Media Have Become a Bigger Threat than the Military

Recently Hebe de Bonafini, the head of the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, stated  that the media has become a bigger threat than the military [El Comercial]. The media dictates a virtual reality that we must accept and how we must act or react to this imposed reality. The media shapes our conception of our goals, our dreams and also our anxieties and fears.

By these days, there is a ferocious campaign against the Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela, a revolution that despite many problems has been able to advance a humanitarian project in favor of the masses and at the same time to integrate all Latin America as a unified political force.  As history has shown, such events are a major concern for the traditional elites, even worse if we are talking about Venezuela, the major source of oil on the world.

Violent protests have been taking place in the privileged parts of some cities under the watch of opposition groups financed by the U.S. [NED / Aporrea] But these protests, in the highest point, have been able to gather some force only on 19 out of 335 municipalities.  By now, this hot points are only on 5 municipalities and still only on the privileged parts of those municipalities.

So what is the concern if these protests are so reduced? The concern is that as small as they are, this protests have taken the lives of at least 29 people and the only reason to get so violent, besides the inaction and even collaboration of the opposition mayors, is that the media empower these violent groups by legitimizing their discourse as true and by magnifying the protests [The Guardian].

The hate implanted by the media has landed roots outside Venezuela [Univision].  In a shopping center in Barcelona Spain, a man who identified himself as in favor of the Venezuelan government was ferociously attacked by many individuals at the point of almost killing him [Youtube].  And that is not an isolated event.  Around the world, people who side the Venezuelan government are victims of verbal and even physical aggression.
